The Red Carpet

The Red Carpet

I came across some velour covered tickets with gold writing.

They brought back memories of walking the Red Carpet in September 2004 with my Mother and partner at the Premier of the Bio-pic, De-Lovely. My mother was 88 and we walked in behind John Barrowman.

Earlier, we had had lunch in Fortnum and Mason's Fountains and then having changed we went to the Sainsbury Wing of the National Gallery as were ready early. My Mother wore a red and silver shimmering top over an embroidered long black velvet skirt. Around her shoulders she wore her vintage New-Look Artic Fox cape stole.

My partner and I were in black tie. We had bought tickets for my Partner's birthday and as a treat for my Mother who loved Cole Porter music. She had also done Ballet and had been in the Woman's League of Health and Beauty in the 1930's where they had all paraded along Regent Street prior to appearing at the Albert Hall. She thoroughly enjoyed walking the Red Carpet and smiled demurely at the fans who probably assumed she was an aged film star. After the film we went to the reception at the Cafe de Paris which she also remembered from the past. Once there she particularly enjoyed chatting to a lady who I think was Lemar's Mother.

Afterwards, outside in Leicester Square to walk back to our car parked nearby, a Policewoman suddenly appeared out of nowhere and escorted us to the car, as she said "so that an obviously special evening ends as happily as it has been throughout". My Mother passed away the following February not long after her 89th birthday. It took me 10 years and downsizing my home to give me the courage to sell the Silver Fox cape and the rest of the outfit. February 2018 will be the 13th anniversary of her passing and the most wonderful way for me to celebrate my wonderful, sparkling Mother.

  1. What a marvellous website! I believe we are related through our common ancestor John Kneller (1791 - 1859), which makes your mother my 3rd cousin, once removed. I did not know much about my family past my parents but after researching via Find my past and Ancestry am discovering lots of fascinating information such as this. the information you have here really brings the past to life, your mother appears to have had a wonderful life.
